“Organic Mobile Dairy! 100% Grassfed Cows = The BEST Milk” interviewed by Chilli Donela
November 16, 2025The Grass Fed Difference
At Shakespeare Hills, we proudly offer 100% Grass Fed beef and dairy.
What IS the difference between grain fed and grass fed?
Don’t all cows eat grass? Does 100% Grass Fed make sense, to us as farmers, and to you?
It ABSOLUTELY does, and it’s worth diving into what that really means.
Cows evolved eating plants, actually more accurately, plants and ruminant animals co-evolved - they evolved together over millions and millions of years, they literally need each other.
This is important, cows are designed to eat plants - their digestive system is a giant fermentation vat, that can process huge quantities of plant material and make the nutrients in those plants available to the cow.
To a human these plants are of very low value nutritionally, but once they have been digested and assimilated into milk or beef, they become high value, nutrient dense foods that we as humans ate as we evolved.
This is the key, for health and vitality, we must focus on eating foods that are appropriate to our species.
Most cows in modern day agriculture receive grain as part of their daily ration, indeed the diet of some dairy cows is 30-40% grain. True, grain promotes high milk production in dairy cows and weight gain in beef cattle, but it does come at a cost.
Is There a Difference: Grain Fed vs Grass Fed Milk and Beef? Absolutely! Recent studies have shown significant differences in the nutritional value of milk and beef from grass fed and grain fed animals:
Grass-fed milk, derived from cows grazing on diverse forages without grains, boasts superior fatty acid profiles compared to grain-fed varieties.
According to studies like those by Benbrook et al., it contains up to 147% more omega-3 fatty acids and 125% more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which support heart health, reduce inflammation, and aid metabolism. Grass fed milk also offers higher levels of antioxidants like beta-carotene and vitamin E, giving it a natural edge over grain-fed milk, which tends to have imbalanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratios and lower nutrient density. 100% Grass fed milk often has a creamier texture and yellower hue from natural pigments.
The Bionutrient Institute's recent study reveals similar advantages in 100% Grass fed beef, which is richer in health-promoting compounds due to the animals' forage-based diets. Grass fed beef provides 2-3 times more omega-3s and CLA, along with elevated vitamins (like E and B vitamins) and phytochemicals that combat oxidative stress and disease risk. According to the study, grass fed beef is leaner with fewer saturated fats than grain-fed beef. Grain feeding prioritises marbling for tenderness but results in higher omega-6 levels - and for anti-inflammatory effect, it is the omega-3s we should emphasise in our diet.
At Shakespeare Hills we have stuck to Traditional Farming Methods, producing 100% Grass Fed Milk and Beef.
We also use no herbicides, pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, GMO’s or hormones - so our production is lower, but we are not compromising nutrition or the environment.
Choosing grass fed isn’t just a personal health win. It’s a vote for farming that nurtures the planet. Healthy soil grows nutrient packed pastures, happy cows produce nutrient dense food, and regenerative practices capture carbon and conserve water. It’s a cycle that supports life at every turn, from the earth beneath our feet to the food on your table.
At Shakespeare Hills, embracing 100% Grass Fed products means choosing nutrient dense food and care for our environment. Win:Win.
